To change the Lightdm background you just need to do the following steps:

1 – Edit the /etc/lightdm/unity-greeter.conf  (use sudo to get root privileges)

2 – Change the background=/usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png line putting the location of the new background image.

3 – Save your changes.

4 – Logout and login again.

5 – Be happy.

  1. Thank you! Ubuntu default art is horrible!

  2. Thanks for this :)

Does this trick work with the slideshow background? It would be great to have the slowly changing backgrounds on there.

  3. would be nice a GUI to sync desktop wallpaper with login wallpaper

  4. The problem is that the desktop wallpaper is related to user preferences, and lightdm background is the same for all users.

  5. I don’t know, you can try, but I think that it will not work for slideshow backgrounds.
